Safe and secure investment options, GICs and term deposits should be considered an important part of a balanced portfolio.
Safe and secure investment options, GICs and term deposits should be considered an important part of a balanced portfolio.
Safe and secure, a GIC guarantees the rate of return for the chosen term as well as your original investment (the principal).
Built for the shorter term, a term deposit is a secure investment that generally offers a higher rate of interest than a traditional savings account. Attractive not only for its security, it also offers a predictable rate of growth and is not exposed to the risk of losses due to market fluctuations.
Also referred to as Market-Linked Term Deposits, these are offered in 3- and 5-year terms. Each offers a guarantee of your principal with a rate of return tied to growth in the stock market; these are based on the performance of the S&P and TXS60 Index. 2
Benefit from a higher potential return than a fixed-rate deposit, but with no risk to your initial investment – no matter what happens in the stock market, you are guaranteed the return of your principal when your deposit matures.
1 When GICs are held outside of registered plans like RRIFs, RRSPs and TFSAs, they will be taxed on the interest earned.
